Welcome! Pineapples are a show of Hospitality!!

pineapples have long been a symbol of hospitality.  the display of pineapples, often seen in architecture and design, is a way to tell your guests "welcome"!
  
I have always loved this symbol and have them throughout our home.  as well, my husband and I decided to use the pineapple motif on our wedding invitations {which we collaborated on and designed ourselves} as a welcoming gesture to our guests, but, also, because we think they are beautiful and regal and represent where we're coming from since we live in a tropical place.  so, we thought a pineapple would be perfect. ☺

back to our home, though...  as I was gathering photos for this post I thought to myself, we actually have a lot more pineapples around than I realized {we even have slightly more than what I have pictured here}.  they must be discreet, though, because no one has ever come to my house and said, "hey, I see that you collect pineapples" as they do with other items we have a lot of... interesting, huh?  anyway, here they are!:

on the tea towel on our bar cart and as part of a flower arrangement {in the 1st photo}:

this is actually a candle.  it's on a sconce in our hallway:

...we have 2 of these candles; the other one is on our mantle:

right outside our home!:

this is a finial that I painted and screwed into an old lamp base, I liked both pieces better this way ;)

it's the base of a lovely marble top side table- too bad you can't actually see how beautiful the marble is in these photos:

British Colonial Chair Rescue

check out this great chair i rescued!!  the guy thought they were so awful that he wasn't even going to sell them at his yard sale!  i convinced him to sell them to me- there were 3 of them and now they're probably my favorite chairs {and i have a lot of them! ;) }

lastly, we added casters...

not only did this chair have good bones, the cushions are the most comfortable ones have in our house- all i had to do was recover them☺

p.s. i used high quality linen-colored bedsheets which was really easy to work with and feels super soft.

Pineapple Lamp Project

LOVE Pineapple Decor, have for a while now.  first we considered getting a pineapple chandelier.  we thought it would be perfect for our south florida home.  

pineapples are tropical and regal at the same time.

we ended up with a shell chandelier, which was always another coveted favorite {tutorial on how i restored one coming soon}.

so back to pineapples...  always loved pineapple lamps, too.  so, since, we didn't get the chandelier, thought that a lamp would be perfect.  this is how we did it:

1st we got some cool old wood-carved pineapples from Paula Roemer, Inc.

then we thought we'd upcycle an old trophy base {from a golf trophy we had taken apart} and use that as the lamp base.

*definitely* wanted to reuse the monogrammed lampshade i had made- remember this project?

this is the drill + bit my hubs used to drill a hole down the middle of the pineapple

so here's our whole 'project suite', or at least the one we originally had planned.  {we decided to reuse the lamp parts from the original, above-mentioned lamp as well.}

...so this was the result...

...but my husband suggested that the lamp base from our original lamp might look better, too...  so we tried that since i was not 100% happy with the 1st result.  

we both liked it better, don't you?  feel free to comment below! 

lastly, i 'painted' it a distressed white finish using a rag instead of a brush and clean white latex paint.  it took some rubbing on and off until i was finally satisfied with the results on all sides and from every angle.

tip for tuesday! hang a rod inside a utility cabinet for spray bottles - perfect for under sinks!!

quick tip i wanted to share with you- if you haven't done this already, a rod in your under the sink cabinet is so helpful for getting spray bottles out of the way and much easier to grab without digging through or knocking other bottles down!!  this is something you can do yourself!
almost every time i reach for a spray bottle in the cabinet under my sink, i end up knocking down other bottles that are in my way.  so, i was very happy to find this simple but so great idea...  i got this idea from cybermema who got this idea from Cook's Country Magazine- it didn't take my husband very long to do at all and, within seconds, things look a bit cleaned up and functions so much better for us!  such a great use of all that wasted space above and makes it so much easier to grab what you need- check it out!

the idea {that i had actually pinned a year ago, i don't know why we waited so long to do this!} called for using a tension rod, but we didn't have one hanging around- and we did have a few extra small curtain rods kicking around that we weren't using.  so, my hubs drilled a small hole at each end and used them to hang the rod onto small gold hooks that he screwed into either side of the cabinet...

Let Them Eat Cake! party

dear diary, i am so exited.  my sister will finally be here for the 1st time next month and it's her 50th birthday!!  we have lived here going on three years now so it's about time she came- don't you think?

i am starting to compile ideas for her birthday dinner, which my husband and i will be hosting!  what do you think about these ideas / inspirations?:

layering up the china, beautiful pink flowers, and statuettes

pink depression glass holding treats/for serving desserts

sandwiching cookies cakes or macarons and berries or fruit

DIY labels and ribbon via the crafting chicks

marie antoinette cake topper

labels for table and desserts...

cake stand servers, milk glass, pennant banner...

...see a theme starting to develop?  don't even have to plan these things, they always just end up coming together ☺ as i'm reviewing and editing these ideas, i have a lightbulb moment!  wanting to do a 'pink party' was secretly for me {actually, i wanted to do pink and green- so palm beach, but it's my party}...  but my sis' favorite place in the world is paris and she LOVES versaille and provence, basically anything excessive and decadent and provincial- what could be more perfect than a marie antoinette/let them eat cake theme?!!  and i still get my pink- LOTS of it!! ♥
i still even have a crystal parfum bottle in the shape of the eiffel tower that we put at her table at our wedding- that'll tie in all my crystal- perfecto!  {or parfait}.
i will 'modernize' it a bit with a little paris circus influence since our family rode the ferris wheel and the merry-go-rounds together there!!  i LOVE this flag idea!!  

and, of course, i'm going to have to add some of newly-painted, very coveted animals- i'll probably swap out giraffes for some pumas or something..., along with fabric flowers on the cake!:

follow up:  okay so it all worked our beautifully.  at practically the last minute i remembered that i had bought a mini porcelain antique 'marie antoinette' bust that i was planning on giving her anyway- a lovely cake topper!  then, my neighbor dropped off a surprise {he had no idea about any of this}- but he just happens to drop off a pair of flocked damask curtains with chandelier silhouettes on it.  isn't that so marie antoinette?  didn't i tell you everything ends up coming together?
so here is the dessert cart that i put together for her, using one of the curtains as a tablecloth:
